Claire Thorley was involved in an industrial explosion at work in July 2015. Her injuries were severe and included burns and spinal fractures requiring surgery; because of this she spent time in intensive care. When Claire started physiotherapy in November 2015 she couldn’t climb the stairs without using both banisters and struggled to walk around the block.
Throughout Claire’s treatment she has been helped to focus on meaningful goals that have mattered to her and her family. One such goal was to complete a 5K run.
In June 2016 Claire achieved that goal by completing the Tatton Park Race for Life 5K in aid of Cancer Research. Claire did fantastically well; her achievement is testament to her drive and ambition – often training in uncomfortable conditions such as extreme heat and torrential rain. Claire’s physiotherapist Helen Martin also ran the race to provide moral support, Helen wanted to cheer Claire on every step of the way.
The Osiris team know that client-relevant goals are a key part of rehab – goals setting must be a process of clinicians working in partnership with clients and families if progress is to be achieved and sustained.
When crossing the finishing line, at a very respectable time of 42 minutes, Claire even managed a sprint finish, pulling away from her physio! Claire was elated but understandably emotional when considering both the reason she required rehabilitation and the improvements she had made in a relatively short period of time.
Claire had a motivational quote that she read regularly to help her on the days when her energy or mood was low:
“The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start.”
We wait to hear if Claire now wants to do a 10k!
